AT THE time of going to press we still didn’t have many confirmed specs, however, we’ve been told the build quality, size and weight of the new Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM will be similar to the EF 100-400mm Mark II lens. The new lens weighs a respectable 1370g (compared to the EF 100-400mm’s 1570g, both without tripod mounts) and is moderately longer at 208mm (compared to 193mm) when zoomed in to 100mm.
It will offer 5-stop IS - or 6-stops with R5 and R6, thanks to their IBIS. So although at 500mm you’ll be restricted to f/7.1, the lens’s IS combined with the R5 and R6’s IBIS should ensure sharp shots even at slower shutter speed when you’re shooting without a tripod.
