Pak Choi
August is usually one of the hottest months of the year – meaning it’s essential to water crops well. August is traditionally holiday time, so you may also need to ask a friend, family member or neighbour to look after the garden while you are away. Try to use grey water – which is relatively clean waste water from kitchens and bathrooms – wherever possible to water your garden in an eco-friendly fashion. When you are at home, take the time to prune existing plants once they have finished flowering and harvest your freshly grown fruit and veg. You should have a lot of harvest in this month, which will be great for light, summer dinners and means less trips to the supermarket. Although August is coming to the end of the main growing season, you can sow and plant produce, such as oriental crops including pak choi, Chinese cabbage, and fast-growing salads in the place of crops that need to be pulled up after they have been harvested.
