INSHORE WIND EFFECTS
Why is it that just when you think you’ll be able to crack off and ease sheets as soon as you reach a headland, the wind comes bang on the nose again? Why do some boats manage to get to the pub a few hours before others? It’s all due to how the wind reacts to the land. While most weather books focus on offshore wind and sea breezes, what affects most coastal cruisers isn’t an approaching front, it’s local wind shifts. While this is usually the preserve of racers, there’s no reason why cruising sailors can’t take advantage of wind bends, shifts and local breezes.
