Practical Fishkeeping  |  May 2023
Continuing with my desire to keep things quirky, I’ve a couple of oddities to treat you with this month. If you’re the kind of fishkeeper who likes your livestock rare and feisty, race straight overleaf to Oliver Lucanus’ piece on ‘Nosferatu’ tetra, Roestes. I’d never seen one before, and now I’m hooked. I’ve also got something on some less-than-conventional cats, but these are the kind of silurids you’re likely to see in the daytime—Chris Sergeant’s piece on the dolphin catfish. I recall once reading how Ivan Mikolji went fishing for piranha, and he kept catching these things mixed in with them. They’re pretty hardcore cats.
I’ve also been getting a lot (an awful lot) of queries on accidents and hazards lately (maybe it’s a seasonal thing) and so I’ve pulled out an excellent piece by Tim Smith on some of the worst things that can go wrong for the lay fishkeeper. To be fair, compared to abseiling or parachute jumping, I think that as a hobby we’ve got things pretty cosy, but I’ll let you be the judge. Enjoy!
