Railnews  |  September 2014
The rate of inflation in July this year was announced in August, and will be the basis for next January's changes to regulated fares. But the general media leapt to the conclusion that the formula will be RPI+1 per cent -- without any supporting announcement from the DfT. Railnews for September sets the record straight. HS2 protestors have lost another application for a judicial review in the High Court, a new study has found that there is a good case for extending the East West rail link eastwards from Bedford to Cambridge, and although most of the August engineering blockades went well Network Rail had to apologise after another possession overran at Ipswich, delaying trains on the Great Eastern line to London after the bank holiday weekend. Our feature this month looks at the renaissance of stations, while TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes makes a strong case for an end to railway privatisaion in Guest Opinion. We also have two special supplements. One is the quarterly contribution from the Rail Delivery Group, and the other is an unusual souvenir from a century ago, when the efficient mobilisation of troops was made possible by the railways after war had broken out in early August 1914. This and much more is in Railnews for September.
