With the new season soon upon us, it’s time to get the gear out ready for the sport ahead. Early season wildfowling can be a bit on the warm side depending on the weather. This article is a look into the tips and tricks I use while pursuing ducks and geese on those warmer autumn days. It’s fair to say that last winter was particularly mild compared to the norm. However, the balmy autumn weather from last September through to November was relentlessly warm. I’ve never shot ducks and geese on a regular basis in such heat. The issue with all this heat is that wildfowlers are generally used to the cold stormy conditions of deepest, darkest winter and a lot of our equipment is designed for the cold. This means that you have to rethink your gear to avoid overheating when trying to bag some early season ducks and geese.
