'GRANGE' AT LAST
Fifty years after a GWR ‘Grange’ 4‑6‑0 was last seen ‘in the metal’, the distinctive, rakish outline of the GWR ‘engineman’s engine’ reappeared on
November 9, with the lifting of a boiler into the frames of new‑build No. 6880 Betton Grange at Llangollen. The craning of the boiler from No. 5952 Cogan Hall onto the largely complete ‘bottom end’ of Betton Grange re‑created the look of one of these ‘smallwheeled Halls’ for the first time since 1966, when the last examples were cut up. The final two in Western Region service, Nos. 6849 Walton Grange and 6872 Crawley Grange, were both withdrawn from Oxford shed on December 31 1965 and sold to Cashmore’s of Newport on February 11 1966, being taken into the yard on May 11 and May 5 that year respectively.
