New research released by Right to Roam has revealed the absurdity of England’s access laws. The group has discovered thousands of ‘access islands’ – fragments of open access land where we have the legal right to roam but which are completely surrounded by land off-limits to us by law. In other words, we are forced to trespass to enjoy these open access spaces, illustrating the flawed system in place here in England under the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act – unless, of course, you can travel by jet pack. These access islands are spread across the country and, perhaps most surprisingly, examples of the largest islands (500m2 or more) are found in almost all of our national parks.
