078 HYDROPNEUMATIC SUSPENSION

A Porsche fixture for only two years, what was this flash yet flawed suspension system for the 911?

Hydropneumatic suspension was introduced on the 911E between 1969 and 1971. It was Porsche’s answer to making the E a more comfortable, rather than sporting, model. Essentially, the E’s intention went all-out for ride quality.

With this in mind, Porsche turned to suspension experts BOGE to develop a solution to maximise comfort and ride quality over conventional springs and dampers. BOGE’s answer was self-levelling hydropneumatic struts at the front of the 911, which combined the role of shock absorbers, springs and anti-roll bars.
