Off-road motorsport has kind of taken a back seat over the last year. But at an elite level, it’s still happening – and at the grass-roots level, people have been using the break to make their vehicles better than ever.
In this month’s issue of 4x4, we’ve got a full report from the pinnacle of off-road racing – the Dakar Rally. In addition, we’ve taken an in-depth look at Titan – a one-off spaceframe special built for rock racing and winch competition at the highest level.
And that’s not the only remarkable vehicle in this month’s issue. We’ve unearthed a low-mileage Defender 110 that’s been rebuilt on a galvanised chassis – and Unimog axles. And if that’s still not wild enough, try a Jaguar XJ6 pick-up on a coiled Land Rover 109 chassis with a 6.5-litre General Motors V8 diesel up front…
There’s yet another unusual Land Rover in this issue, too, in the shape of a late 110 with JE Motorworks’ 2.3-litre Ford Ecoboost engine conversion. And if you’re looking for a modern Landy, we’ve had our first experience behind the wheel of the new Defender 90.
Also tested this month are the SsangYong Korando, which is a brilliant option in its class, and Jeep’s award-winning Renegade 4xe Trailhawk. Is it the best plug-in hybrid yet? We think it’s in with a shout at the very least.
There’s a fond farewell to a much older Jeep in this issue, too, as our project Cherokee sets sail for pastures new. And of course, we’ve got our usual news, product updates and so on – as well as some more fond reminiscences, from the days when Britain still got proper snowy winters. Lockdown might not be over yet – but pick up the March issue of 4x4 and you won’t be short of quality reading to help see you through!

Since lockdown, there has been a huge growth in the number of people getting into camping, the outdoors and enjoying an off-grid lifestyle. More and more, as a society we want to get away. Away from the relentlessness of a working life that has increasingly invaded our homes; away from the tyranny of always-on electronics and ever-watchful social media; away from the pressure to be busy, to be productive, to be available.

When your every waking hour is spent feeling hunted, just disappearing into the countryside for the weekend is a blessed relief. And if you’re in a 4x4, you can disappear further away and deeper into it. Overlander 4x4 reflects Britain’s new-found interest in an outdoor lifestyle.

We’re not a magazine about camping, but a magazine about the sort of adventures that involve it. Primarily, we focus on overlanding – showcasing both trip-of-a-lifetime expeditions as well as adventures that are more modest and, for most of us, more attainable. As always with anything four-wheel drive, it’s going to be a journey worth making, so join us for the adventure.
