In its long history T&M has always tried to promote interest in old tractors. We have reported on those directly involved with them – restorers, collectors and so on – but we’ve also aimed to involve those close to the hobbyists. Junior, for instance, is extremely popular and youngsters send in more of their pictures every week than we can really handle. Female members of the family become involved through our Ladies on Tractors pages, a feature that grows in popularity month after month.
So it is particularly pleasing for us to be reporting on the restorations and collections of teenagers: they are, after all, the future of this hobby and it’s good to know that they carry on their parents’
enthusiasm for it. Our two subjects this month (page 10) approach it differently – one saves up his money and has most of the work done for him while the other has decided to get in there and get her hands dirty. It’s a choice that many of their elders have to make, too. Clearly these two aren’t the only young adults who are pursuing old tractors as a hobby, so if you are one, a parent of one, or know one, let me know. It would be good to cover more of their work. Hot on the heels of the sun-kissed Dorset Steam Fair comes the rain-lashed Newark tractor show. Well, the sun may shine but I wouldn’t bank on it in November. Regardless of the weather, it’s always a show worth attending and this year there’s a new prize on offer from a man whose International tractors bear witness to his motto “Perfection without compromise.” Read about Mick Evans on page 27. And talking of International, or rather international, our reporters have been travelling far and wide this month. Howard Sherren went over to Germany to witness a Schluter Working Day and tells us about
it and the company on page 38; Roger Hamlin goes French with a Renault he found in Cornwall (page 18) and Peter Love has been over to Ireland to look at an interesting collection owned by the ‘King of Glin.’ See page 16.

Its focus is tractors from the 1960s to the 1990s, reflecting an era of tremendous change in machinery – from the days when agriculture was a major employer, through to the time when new technology transformed farming forever.
