The recently published State of the Wildlife Economy in Africa report by the ALU School of Wildlife Conservation shows, for the first time, how the continent’s wildlife contributes to local, national and regional economies.
It estimates that Africa’s wildlife-related activities raised between US$12.4bn (direct) and US$42.9bn (total) (2020). That’s a sector that generates almost the total GDP of Botswana and represents over five times the value of the illegal wildlife trade.
