There was always a dark, troubling aspect to the reclusive Phil Spector. He was accused of pulling a gun on members of The Ramones, and his second wife Ronnie claimed he had subjected her to years of psychological torment during their marriage. When in February 2003 the actress Lana Clarkson was found shot dead at Spector’s mansion in Alhambra, California, the producer claimed it was an accidental suicide – but the authorities had other ideas. Read this issue’s “The Killing That Put Pop’s Mad Genius In Jail” for the full story.

“Crimes That Made The Headlines – Newcastle’s ‘Horror In The Bath’ Case” takes us back to the 1980s and the brutal slaying at her Tyneside home of teenager Rachael Mewes. When police investigations into the murder got under way, it soon became apparent that the main suspect’s powerful grip over the community was stopping witnesses coming forward. There’s a fascinating report in this issue.

Killers who get away with murder once probably consider themselves lucky, but four times? How do they feel then? In the case of Adolph Laudenberg, it’s a pertinent question. He embarked on a heinous spell of killing vulnerable women on America’s west coast in the early 70s. And each time he managed to evade justice – despite even confessing at the time. Decades would pass before the loose-tongued strangler finally got his comeuppance. Read “America’s Most Evil – The Serial Killer Who Couldn’t Keep A Secret” for the full story.
