If only I could remember things. I have several ‘holes’ in my memory that just absorb information and then never let it out. The most annoying of these is currently acroporid species names. I’ve photographed them, I’ve fragged them, I’ve written about them yet I cannot remember them. Time after time I have to point and say the staghorn or the one with lots of polyp extension, when I really mean formosa or millepora. I’ve never understood this affliction. I can remember every phone number I’ve ever had and even my National Insurance number, but not species names of some SPS corals.
It wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m supposed to know these things. Someone once called me an expert, until I put him right. I am not whatsoever; the degree of my own ignorance grows daily as I discover more and more things that I never knew I didn’t know. If you see what I mean?
So, forgetting what little I do know is doubly annoying and not fair. I suspect I’m not the only one though and that is why we need REAL experts, so to all our writers and contributors I salute you for your ability to learn and above all remember it.
I shall wave as they wheel
me off to the home.
