Little is known about the exact cause of IBS. Though it’s not life threatening, it can be painful, inconvenient and embarrassing. Nutrition and stress seem to play a big role for those with IBS and are known as the two primary triggers.
Irritable bowel syndrome (or IBS) is normally characterised by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits (diarrhoea or/and constipation) without any identifiable cause. It can represent up to 50 per cent of all referrals to gastroenterologists and tends to affect younger people and women more (women are diagnosed twice as often as men).
