A study of 600,000 drinkers showed people who drank more than 12.5 units (100g) of alcohol a week were likely to die sooner than those who drank less. Current UK guidelines advise limiting alcohol intake to 14 units a week – about six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine. Women who drink more live on average 1.3 years less than those drinking under this limit. The study was carried out by 120 researchers and published in The Lancet.
