ADECISION by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) to sell part of the former Radlett Aerodrome site to property investment firm SEGRO for the development of a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) will be challenged in the High Court.
The company purchased 1000 acres of land last summer, close to the Midland Main Line, M1, M25 and A1 (M) near St Albans, from HCC and Gorhambury Estates Company in a £120 million deal.
Campaign group Save St Albans: Fight the Freight, which is opposed to the scheme, applied to challenge the sale of the 300 acres of land which belonged to the council. It argues that the space was bought by the authority in 1984 for a nominal fee of £1.00, specifically so it could remain as open space, and believes that right is protected in law.
