Viaduct fatalities
A PASSENGER train from Londonderry to Burtonport, on the Londonderrry and Lough Swilly Railway, was blown over on January 30, when crossing the Owencarrow Viaduct between Kilmacrenan and Creeslough. One vehicle was blown off the rails and pulled another over with it, though as the couplings held, neither fell to the bottom of the ravine, although roof destruction caused several of the passengers to be thrown into the valley beneath, three being killed outright, while a fourth died later in Letterkenny Hospital. Others were more or less seriously injured.
