September’s 2020 European Rowing Under 23 Championships, held in Duisburg, Germany, marked the return to international competition after a year largely devoid of any on-water racing whatsoever. It was the first of three European championships held in quick succession and was followed by the 2020 European Rowing Junior Championships which was followed the 2020 European Championships.
With a record entry of under 23 athletes, many of whom were looking for their first taste of competition in over 12 months, it was a carefully managed and socially-distanced event; the first trial of World Rowing’s ability to safely operate competitions while Covid-19 remains at large. Measures included testing for teams arriving from ‘high-risk’ countries, hand sanitising stations placed at entrances, and the required wearing of face masks.
