WILD FISHING
A good catch
Wild fishing has become fashionable – and here Kevin Adams, the author of a new book on the joys of off-the-beaten-track angling, explains why he’s fallen hook, line and sinker for it

River Irfon, Powys, Wales
‘The River Irfon is like the rivers that I was used to when I was fishing in upstate New York. It’s bedrock – great big rocks with the river racing over it. You have to be very careful wading, and wear waders with a belt. It’s not for the infirm as you can get swept away. But it’s lovely fishing.’
The Arundell Arms, River Thrushel, Devon
‘To my mind, the Arundell Arms is the absolute zenith of wild fishing in the UK. The pub specialises in giving you a room for the night and a guide, if you want it, and unparalleled wild fishing. All the people at night, drinking beer and talking rubbish, they’re all wild fishermen, and it’s gorgeous.’ There are a few other fishing inns, but they get it spot on.’
