It’s a shame one of the main takeaways from the success of Ready Player One was that sci-fi fans like geeky references. This virtual reality thriller rarely passes up the opportunity to show off its protagonist’s pop culture literacy, but all the nods to the likes of The Matrix, Doctor Who and The X-Files feel like a distraction from the main plot.
