JAVICIA LESLIE
FACE TO FACE WITH THE BIGGEST STARS
There’s a new Batwoman in town – and she’s been living her entire life for this moment
Words by Darren Scott
Javicia Leslie not only made headlines when she was cast as the new Batwoman in season two of the DC show: she made history. As the first queer person of colour to wear the cowl, she was taking the character – Ryan Wilder, created especially for the series – in a whole new direction, following the departure of Ruby Rose as Kate Kane.
On your Instagram you’ve been talking about watching Batman movies – were you always a fan?
I’ve always been a fan of Batman. Michael Keaton’s was the first superhero movie I ever saw. It was so epic to me. Tim Burton’s version of Batman in general has always been my favourite because it’s very colourful, it’s very dark, it’s very melodramatic. When you look at a superhero show, you want to get lost in it. You don’t want to feel like it’s reality. His was so far from reality it made it fun for me.
