Remembering two ship lovers from both sides of the Atlantic

JIM SHAW

Jim Shaw, the magazine’s news and cargo ship correspondent, passed away on 1 May 2024 after a short illness. He has left a series of articles, written to his usual high standards, and these will be published over the coming months, starting with one in this issue on new marine technologies, a subject on which he was an expert.

Jim’s interest in ships began while he was growing up near Humboldt Bay in Northern California, where foreign vessels called in the early 1950s to load lumber for post-war construction projects in Asia and Europe.

THE SUMMER OF TWO PADDLERS
When British paddle steamer services were in steady decline 60 years ago, visitors to Weymouth were able to enjoy the unlikely spectacle of two rival paddlers. Both vessels had been withdrawn as uneconomic after long service with their established owners but, instead of being broken up, they were purchased by individuals who saw that they might yet have a future. Richard Clammer recalls those memorable few weeks in the summer of 1964, when both these historic ships were running out of Weymouth.
