■ Any DK yarn in grey, red, blue, green, yellow and orange
■ A4mm (US G/6) hook

Holding the yarn at WS of the work, insert hook from RS to WS where you wish the surface crochet to begin, yrh, pull loop through to RS, *insert hook back through to WS in direction you want the surface crochet to travel, yrh and pull up loop, pull through loop on hook; rep from * as required For a full list, see page 88 of Simply Crochet magazine
NOTES
Square is worked in turned rounds. When working into the corners, work into each individual ch.
BETWEEN THE LINES
Using grey, make a magic loop.
Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), 2tr in loop, ch2, (3tr in loop, ch2) 3 times, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [12 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]
Round
2
(WS) Ch3, *tr in each st to ch-2 sp, 2tr in first ch, ch2, 2tr in next ch; rep from * around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [28 sts, 4 ch-2 sps]
Rounds
3-5 As Round 2. [76 sts, 4 ch-2 sps] With RS facing, join red in any st.
Round 6 (RS) Ch1 (does not count as st), *dc in each st to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch2, dc) ch-2 corner sp; rep from * around, ss to beg dc.
Fasten off.
SURFACE CROCHET
Use the image as a guide when working the surface crochet.
Using blue, surface crochet between Rounds 1-2.
Using green, surface crochet between Rounds 2-3.
Using yellow, surface crochet between Rounds 3-4.
Using orange, surface crochet between Rounds 4-5.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
