Try a split complementary colour scheme…
A split complementary colour scheme is a variation on the complementary effect and involves varying one of the complementary colours by using the two colours on either side of it instead.
On the rotating scheme selector at the centre of your wheel, point the arrow at the top of the tall triangle to a colour you know you like. Follow the tall triangle along the line where it says ‘split complementary’ to the two colours at the base of the triangle – these two are the colours it suggests putting with the original colour. You can expect to see a softer contrast than the complementary scheme.
