DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT
Technical Editor Andi looks over three of the latest high-tech action cameras that’ll capture your best (and worst) moments on the bike.
Not exactly essential to everyone, but vital to anyone wanting to jump on the vlog train and make some epic content, the humble action camera has moved on since the early days of the original GoPro. Action cameras now come with built-in tech that keeps your video wobble free and can capture the action at resolutions of more than 4K. We take a look at three of the most feature-packed that will help any Ed Wood become a would-be Steven Spielberg.
GOPRO HERO 9
Price: £329.98 • From: GoPro, gopro.com
The latest GoPro action camera, the Hero 9, is by far the most advanced ‘standard’ GoPro to date, but not all of its features are a step forward – some are actually a step back.
Features that GoPro want you to take notice of when you take a look at the Hero 9 are the updated image stabilisation, the larger battery, a new front-facing display and software updates that make this Hero far more versatile than before.
However, the one feature that had us excited about the Hero 9 at launch is the lens. You see, all GoPro Hero action cameras have had a removable and replaceable lens, well, up until the Hero 8 that was, when GoPro decided that what their rugged camera really needed was a lens that couldn’t easily be removed when it broke or became scratched. Now, you might be more careful with your action cameras, but I quite often scratch a lens, either by careless packing or careless riding, so the Hero 8 became a no go for me and I stuck to the Hero 7 until the 9 was released. Not only can we now easily replace a scratched lens, but the new camera even offers an additional lens ‘Mod’ for a wider angle and improved stabilisation. So, what about all those new features?
