This one does a great job of transforming your tablet into a battlefield, as hundreds of soldiers in historic garb try to jam their spears through enemy throats. FOOTBALL MANAGER TOUCH 2019

This isn’t the full Football Manager experience, but it’s close. Choose a team from one of 116 leagues and set about building your squad, then watch them get thumped 14-0 through inexplicably forgetting how to play football. A bit like Middlesbrough under Tony Pulis. £19.99 / Android, iPad

GRID AUTOSPORT

Don’t expect a stripped-back mobile take here: it’s the full AAA PS3 racer. You get 100 cars and circuits to tackle, and a slew of settings. Want arcade thrills? Head for rookie mode, point your car in the right direction and let rip. Think you’re the next Penelope Pitstop? Nuke the driver aids… and try not to spin into a wall. £9.99 / iOS

The way politics is these days, you’d be forgiven for wanting to stamp your own grand vision on the world. Tropico gives you that opportunity by squeezing your very own banana republic into your iPad. Natch, you get to be leader, making all the big decisions – and finding out that making a paradise isn’t easy after all. £11.99 / iPad

THE TALOS PRINCIPLE

In this port of a much-loved PC classic, you awake in a garden as a robot with some nutcase booming at you, demanding you solve puzzles involving murdery drones.
