LED-backlit telly tech may not be especially glamorous in a world of OLEDs, but it’s stuck around for so long now that little else can match it for sheer value. Sony’s X85 range is a great case in point. It’s been a price/performance sweet spot in the lineup for a while now, and the L series looks better than ever where that ratio is concerned.
That’s because Sony has, for the first time, brought local dimming to its full-array backlit VA panel. Now, 24 individually controllable zones might not be all that impressive a number when stretched across 55in… but it’s not about how many zones you’ve got, as much as how well you control them. And Sony has great form here, with some of the best picture-processing in the business.
