Clambering up tough surfaces doesn’t have to be rock hard

VIA FERRATA

Offering non-technical climbers the chance to experience how it feels to cling to the side of a vertiginous rock face, via ferrata are alpine routes formed by permanently placed metal rungs set into the side of mountains. Historically, such ‘iron roads’ were used by combatants in WWI, during a terrible sky-high battle for control of the Dolomite Mountains between Italy and Austria, but now thousands of the routes are explored by recreational climbers on the continent, and the UK has several via ferratas too.

CANICROSS

Running with your best buddy is very rewarding, especially if your mate has four legs and helps you up the gnarliest hills. Born in Scandinavia, canicross has become big in Britain, but there’s more to running efficiently with your dog than you might realise. It’s important to use the correct kit, and never over-exercise your dog – especially in summer.

E-SCOOTING

Heralded as an obvious answer to urban road congestion and the resultant air pollution, folding e-scooters are widely used in cities across Europe. Many models now offer indicators, lighting, regenerative braking and a host of other features. Currently you can’t use a privately owned e-scooter on UK roads and pavements, but if you have access to private sealed surfaces, these powerpacked machines can provide an exhilarating ride.

Catch some serious – and some not-so-serious – air

KITESURFING

Although wing-sports are currently soaring in popularity, no other board-based activity can come close to the aerial capability and flamboyance enjoyed by skilled kitesurfers, who sometimes seem to spend as much time in the air as they do skimming the waves. Jumps of over 35 metres in height have been recorded, with hangtime exceeding 20 seconds.
