1 GOOGLE PIXEL WATCH
• £TBA, store.google.com
We’ve known, or at least heavily suspected, that a Pixel Watch would be a thing for years. Even before Google first announced its intention to purchase Fitbit in 2019, it’s been pretty inevitable – the company now has the combined IPs of Fitbit, Pebble and its own Wear OS to play with, and it would be a crime to let those go to waste.
While the Pixel Watch still isn’t a thing you can buy (Google helpfully says it’s coming at some point in the autumn, which given Google’s usual release pattern probably means October) we do at least have confirmation that it exists and what it looks like thanks to its reveal at the recent Google IO event.
What we don’t know with any concrete certainty, at this point, are the specs or the price. On the latter point, we’d expect Google to undercut the price of the Apple Watch Series 7 and Samsung Galaxy Watch just a little; on the former, we’d almost argue that the specs don’t matter.
What matters is Google using its know-how and its vast library of fitness data and smartwatch patents to give smartwatchwearers everything they’ve been crying out for. This needs to be the first non-Apple smartwatch that feels essential. Every WearOS wrinkle needs to be ironed out. The Pixel Watch needs to be buttery smooth and deadly accurate. We’ll find out whether Google manages it in a few months.
WILL IT ROCK?
Leaks have turned out to be pretty accurate, but should we believe the rumour that the Pixel Watch will carry the near four-yearold Exynos 9110 processor? If this turns out to be super-affordable, perhaps.
