When the PlayStation 5 launched four years ago, it heralded a new era of gaming. Sony claimed it was capable of true next-gen features that sounded too good to be true – 8K gaming, ray tracing support and 4K 120Hz were all bandied, even badged on the box.
Unfortunately, it turned out that they were indeed a tad fanciful. The original console was (and still is) capable of ray tracing and 4K 120Hz, but almost never at the same time, while 8K turned out to be just a crazy pipe dream.
Now though we have a follow-up – a mid-generation console refresh that, like the PS4 Pro in 2016, improves on existing hardware to such an extent that games can be boosted to all-new levels of graphical performance. And it finally introduces the feature set we were originally promised. You’ll have to dig deep into your pocket to take advantage, but there’s just enough upgraded grunt under the hood to give us what was trailed first time around.
The PS5 Pro is pricey, yes, but it is also a powerhouse with the talents to make PS5 games look as if they’re running on a more-than decent gaming PC, and it’s a sleek and sexy beast, to boot.

It’s certainly beautiful kit – but, strangely, there’s no vertical stand

There are already 100 PS5 Pro Enhanced games available or coming soon, which feature higher frame rates, greater resolution, ray tracing or all three at the same time. This has proved difficult on the existing PS5 models.
