ENCAPSULATE 2008
Sci-Fi and Silliness abound as massively influential games come into orbit!
Words by Matthew Vernall
Two thousand and eight: the year geekdom went mainstream. The year The Dark Knight took to the silver screen in style, the Marvel Cinematic Universe exploded into existence with Iron Man, households across the world were playing Wii Sports, private space travel was first achieved by SpaceX with Falcon 1 and on Valentine’s Day British people learned the word “Bazinga!” as Big Bang Theory was first broadcast in the UK.
Board games would continue to go from strength to strength, as a broadening audience demanded newer, more innovative and wilder games, something many developers were extremely happy to provide. Join us as we look back at 2008…
DOMINION
It’s not every year that an entirely new genre gets introduced, but the world of deckbuilding board games wouldn’t exist without the wildly popular Dominion.
Players begin with a pile of coin and estate cards, gazing out at a multitude of action cards to purchase. Every card bought will eventually return to your deck, letting you draw more, play more or even discard cards from your opponents. As there are limited cards for each type, players are encouraged to build their own unique cardboard engine, finding the right combination to generate stacks of cash.
