Still Life with Lemons and Glass of Water, oil on panel, 11½x14in (29x35.5cm). The spoon displays a combination of reflected and refracted shapes. Note how the white and green object at the back (an upsidedown candlestick) apparently disappears on the left-hand side of the glass. Next to this the handle of the spoon seems to occupy two different positions. The colours of different metals can be challenging to represent because of their high reflectivity. For the stainless steel spoon I used a mixture of Winsor & Newton Mars black and lemon yellow hue
Visual reflection occurs when light is thrown back from a surface, whilst refraction happens if light is deflected when passing through something like glass, water or air. These are rather basic definitions!
