CHAP Winter 20 is the adventure edition, topped off by an extensive interview with the world’s greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who discusses how he switched from a long career in the army to the life of an explorer, his discovery of the lost city of Ubar, how he got kicked out the SAS and how he tried to cure his vertigo by climbing the Eiger. The adventure theme continues with features on explorer outfits, the violent history of the Tango, James Bond stunt driver Ben Collins on the history of Aston Martin, Australian hat maker Blakesby Hats, John and Colleen Darnell photographed in the TWA Flight Center, New York, the life of explorer Sir Richard Burton and a tribute to the late Dame Diana Rigg.

We also hear about a tailor who devised a tweed skiing suit, the rise of British Rum, 1960s motorcycling gang the Ton Up Boys, the Semiotics of Face Masks, decadent author Jean Lorrain, The Chap Tarot and an interview with fizz-swilling bon vivant and cabaret singer, Champagne Charlie.

Chap

This is just the sort of reading matter I like - a modern take on days long past eg Edwardian. There's a definite place in the world for eccentricity, although in a small Devon town near Dartmoor I'm a bit of stand-out! Still, one must persevere, and 'Chap' is a real encouragement. Keep up the good work, chaps! Reviewed 19 May 2020
