ROLAND PIDOUX
French cellist Roland Pidoux died on 21 September at the age of 78. He served as principal cellist of the Orchestre national de France (ONF) from 1978 to 1987 and formed the New Pasquier Trio with violinist Régis Pasquier and violist Bruno Pasquier.
Born in Paris in 1946, Pidoux studied with Jean Hubeau and Joseph Calvet at the Conservatoire de Paris. After graduating, he established the Ensemble Instrumental de France with Jean-Pierre Wallez, later renamed Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. He also played with the Via Nova Quartet for seven years and joined the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris in 1969, before starting with the ONF in 1978.
Pidoux also established a trio with Régis Pasquier and pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier, and over the course of his career performed alongside renowned musicians including Mstislav Rostropovich, Pierre Fournier, Isaac Stern and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
