The View Magazine  |  Summer 2020
At the height of the first lockdown, with the Covid 19 pandemic affecting every aspect of our lives, we turned to our favorite artists for inspiration and put together an auction – Incarceration Nation with art works by Fiona Graham MacKay, Rachel Ara, Conrad Shawcross, Bob and Roberta Smith, Anish Kapoor and others, alongside art from women in prison and fomerly incarceated women. The art is highlighted throughout this edition. The cover image is a searingly haunting limited edition print cereated specially for The View by young Black woman artist Nubiart, one of four she created to let women in prison know that they were not forgotten, but that they were very much on our minds.
Farah Naz our psychotherapist described how to stay safe and sane in prison and in the community as the pandemic ravaged our communities and created silos of seld isolation. This was the food issue, with recipes from ingredients found only on prison canteens by celebrity chef and former model Ruby Tandoh, barrister Gavin John Williams on foraging, and Bee Wilson on Food and Memory.
Our favourite lawyers in this edition include an in depth interview on senior barrister Jeremy Dein QC , Jemima Lovatt on the Domestic Abuse Bill and Matt Stanbury, on how to submit an appeal against conviction or sentence.
