The Torres News is an independent, Torres Strait Islander owned and operated newspaper based on Thursday Island (Waiben).

We cover news and events of the Kaurareg homeland of Kaiwalagal, the Torres Strait homeland and the Northern Peninsula Area Cape York homelands of the Anggamuthi, Atambaya, Wuthathi, Yadhaykenu and Gudang Peoples including: Badu, Bamaga, Boigu, Dauan, Erub, Horn Island (Ngurupai), Iama, Injinoo, Kerriri, Mabuyag, Masig, Mer, Moa - Kubin (Arkai) and St Pauls (Wug), Muralag, New Mapoon, Poruma, Saibai, Seisia, Thursday Island (Waiben) - TRAWQ and Port Kennedy, Ugar, Umagico, Warraber and everywhere in between.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula regions. We pay our sincere respects to the Elders and the Peoples of the Torres Strait and the Northern Peninsula Area, across whose traditional lands and seas we report.

Edition 219 Torres Shire Council has hosted a critical Housing Forum this week, with speakers and guests including Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson, local member David Kempton and Torres Strait Regional Authority chair George Nona. More than 80 local participants celebrated hitting their step goals as part of the Torres Health 10,000 Steps 6-Week Challenge, held earlier this year. NRL Cowboys House boarder and Year 8 student Pryce Mara has become the youngest artist ever to have a design featured on the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys annual Indigenous clothing range.
