Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is on familiar ground as a socially awkward genius in this stylised, off-kilter biopic of artist Louis Wain, which spans 1881 to 1925. Wain is credited with popularising cats as domestic pets with his surreal, cartoony feline illustrations, but his lack of business nous meant he never earned the financial reward to match his work’s popularity.
