Transgender girl Lola and her estranged father Philippe travel together to scatter Lola’s mother’s ashes in this hope-dappled melodrama. Writer/director Laurent Micheli’s (2016’s Even Lovers Get The Blues) sophomore feature capably steers past issue-film pitfalls and the script’s occasional shortcomings. Mya Bollaers is raw and unrefined in the lead role, perfectly inhabiting her character from the start, while Benoît Magimel imbues the reticent, embittered Philippe with nuance as he and Lola navigate prejudices, childhood trauma and acceptance while battling intense grief.
