While purists argued whether it was really unplugged if Kurt used a fuzz pedal, the rest of the world was just amazed by Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged In New York. Kurt wasn’t limited by convention or genre, and his D-18e let him straddle the acoustic and electric worlds easily. Factory–fitted with DeArmond pickups popular in early Gretsches, Kurt’s D-18e added a Bartolini soundhole pickup for more typical acoustic tones. The guitar in question fetched $6m at auction in 2020.
