BEGINNING in the early ’60s, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson recorded over 20 reliably excellent albums as leader, in addition to playing with some of the greatest names in jazz: Herbie Hancock, Alice Coltrane and Chick Corea, among others. As ayoung man he was active in the Detroit scene before spending two years in the army, after which he headed straight for the jazz mecca of New York City. An early notable position was in the band of pianist Horace Silver, where he provided amemorable solo on the original recording of “Song For My Father”, now astandard.
