Garage-rock gumbo spiced with Arabian and Latin flavours
Sultry, psychedelic slinkiness seems to run in the veins of Carolina Faruolo, formerly of Los Bitchos, and Danny Lee Blackwell of Texan rockers Night Beats. As a new duo, they harness Uruguayan Faruolo’s love of cumbia and Night Beats’ swaggering garage energy and ride them full pelt, adding Arabianflavoured exoticism on “Sultan” and “Hourglass” (which cutely references The Beach Boys) and a dash of Santana’s heady vibes. This is an infectious, groove-laden record that, if it strays a little close to period pastiche, is so full of energy on the likes of the shaking-busy, carnivalesque “La Estampida”, it’s tough to quibble.
