Carrying the Torah, a pencil and charcoal drawing by Simeon Solomon, £6800 at Sworders on March 13.
London Judaica dealer Joseph Landau travelled to Sworders in Stansted Moutfitchet on March 13 with the sole purpose of buying a pencil, charcoal and white chalk drawing Carrying the Torah by Simeon Solomon (1840-1905).
Five telephone lines competed against Landau who was the winning bidder at £6800 (plus 23% premium). “I would have paid considerably more,” said Landau. “It’s very rare to have an artwork that has a Jewish subject matter – in this case a rabbi carrying the Torah crown – by a Jewish artist”.
