POLAND’S Piotr Małachowski has two Olympic silver medals to his name, but the world and European discus champion has shown he has a heart of gold after auctioning off his 2016 Olympic medal to save a young boy’s life.
Małachowski announced he would sell off his Rio silver, which he won behind Germany’s Christoph Harting, to help fund laser treatment for three-year-old Olek Szymanski’s retinoblastoma – a rare eye cancer – in New York.
“I decided to sell it because it brought so much happiness to me and I decided life was also about sharing and you need to share happiness with others. That’s the simplest way you should lead your life,” the 33-year-old told BBC Radio’s Sportshour.
