My daughter was inconsolable while walking on the boardwalk. Her crying wouldn’t stop. This was no ordinary cry, this was the: “Get me out of here!” at its finest cry. Without much choice my husband and I left the boardwalk, but I couldn’t help but think to myself: “Why in the world would she not enjoy the boardwalk?”
Of course my husband and I were beyond confused. Everyone loves the boardwalk, the oceans making waves, the soothing sound it creates when the water hits the sand, people laughing and talking with friends. It is such an exciting place to be, but to a child with autism or any other similar disorder the sounds of the waves, the sounds of people laughing, combined with the bright lights is simply too much to take in.If the boardwalk was too much to handle, surely school (which my daughter was supposed to start that fall) would be a better place for her?
