INSULATION OPTIONS FOR TIMBER FRAME
Simon Orrells, managing director at Frame Technologies, answers your questions about choosing the right insulation for your new timber frame self build
Q: What are the main options for timber frame insulation?
A: Insulation should be chosen with consideration for the material’s breathability and interaction with the timber frame – and your structural supplier can talk you through this at the design stage. The most suitable insulation also depends on desired thermal performance, and choosing the right one can help in lowering your carbon footprint.
Polyurethane is the most common option for insulation, with about 75% of the timber frame self build market using it in their projects. This is the best insulation for the thinnest wall solution, ie less thickness is required to achieve optimum results, maximising the floor space inside your house. As it is made in factory-controlled conditions, quality and thermal performance can be guaranteed.
