10 projects that maximise natural light

Here, Emily Smith shares some of her favourite light-filled projects and takes a closer look at the innovative ways they make the most of natural illumination
Open plan
Minimising the number of solid walls in your home will help natural light to penetrate further into the dwelling. The glazed doors and rooflights in this extension project by Threefold Architects work in partnership with the open-plan layout and white walls, as natural light permeates throughout the space.
Rooflights & sunpipes
The pitched roof in this space means that vertical windows aren’t suitable, so two large rooflights have been integrated into the scheme to ensure the room is filled with daylight. Another alternative to standard windows has been applied, as sun tunnels by Velux feature in the corridor. These work by filtering daylight, captured from the roof, down through tubing and into the room below.
