This bespoke four-bedroom family home located in Northumberland is the work of Elliot Architects. The property’s sloping ground meant the designers had to forego conventional house layouts and build a home sympathetic to the setting – with variations in the floor levels responding to the site. The plot posed further restrictions as services ran straight through it.
The architects chose a cross-shaped plan to divide the dwelling into areas of varying privacy, with a southfacing kitchen and the garden located north of the home, on the only flat section of the plot.
The use of natural materials, such as slate shingle walls on the ground floor and timber and slate on the second storey, gives this build a unique look while respecting the nearby woodlands. Extensive glazing on both sides of the dining area maximise the insideoutside feel. The cantilevered gable is home to the master bedroom and a sheltered balcony.
