Cage & Aviary Birds  |  10-May-23
With many exotic species, particularly softbills, in low current supply, bird parks and zoos often the best chance to admire something a bit different. And this week softbill expert Gary Bralsford shares his pleasure of some gorgeous species admired in a collection just across the county line. Elsewhere, we major in Border canaries with updates and advice from top champ Paul Heathcote and newbie Andy Johnson. For budgie fans we explore the recessive pied and also those exquisite colour budgies. And there’s stacks more, including the official reaction of the NCA and CC to the DEFRA consultation.
There’s a kaleidoscope of colour and variety this week, as we introduce the beautiful ringed teal of South America (with its love of a high perch) and learn for the first time about the full range of colour mutations in the elegant Barbary dove. We also learn why one fancier changed from keeping little owls to keeping screech owls (hint: the screeches were quieter!) and why another lifelong birdkeeper’s favourite all-time species is the sparrowhawk! And among all the regulars we also convey our best wishes to Chris Smith, a tireless worker on behalf of the fancy, who is now planning his deserved retirement.
