Housing manager Rui’s 404 was brought over from France in 1966 when a Madeiran returned to his homeland. But as the owner aged, the car was forgotten for a decade until Rui bought it in 2010. “It took about eight years to rebuild,” he says. “Parts were obtained from L’Aventure Peugeot in France. Whereas it’s easy sourcing components for British and German cars, it’s more difficult with French models.” Rui drives the 404 at least once a month: “Peugeots have such comfortable suspension, and it’s spacious and reliable – it’s easy to see why all the island’s taxis were once 403s and 404s.”
